Whitney Houston (1963 – 2012)

“Yes, Jesus Loves Me”

This was the title of the last song that Whitney Houston performed in her final public appearance.

The 48 year old singer and actress was found unresponsive in her hotel room bathtub, and attempts to revive her were unsuccessful. The cause of death was listed as “accidental drowning.”

Kirk Douglas (1916 – 2020)

“Mike can get it done”

These were among the last words of the legendary actor and filmmaker, spoken to his son Michael, in the days before his death. They refer to his support for Michael Bloomberg in the 2020 presidential campaign.

Kirk Douglas died at his home in Beverly Hills, surrounded by family, he was 103 years of age.

Carrie Fisher (1956 – 2016)

“I am dead. How are you? I’ll see you soon … I would call and tell you what this is like, but there is no reception up here […]Cut. New scene, new setup, new heavenly location. I have finally got the part that I have been rehearsing for all my life. God gave me the part. This is the end of the road I have been touring on all my life.”

Carrie Fisher left behind this after-death note, writing as if she was dead, which her brother Todd later discovered.

The actress and writer, most well known for playing the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars, died at the UCLA Medical center in Los Angeles, four days after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London. She was 60 years old.

Aretha Franklin (1942 – 2018)

“Bernadette”

This was the Queen of Soul’s final word spoken in a phone conversation with a friend just days before her death. “Bernadette” was her favorite song by The Four Tops.

Aretha Franklin died aged 76 at her home in Detroit, surrounded by family and friends. The cause of death was malignant pancreatic tumor.

Patrick Swayze (1952 – 2009)

“When it looks like I may live longer than five minutes I’ll drop cigarettes like a hot potato.”

The actor and producer, a heavy smoker, spoke these last words shortly before his death at the age of 57 from pancreatic cancer. Patrick Swayze died at his home in Los Angeles with family by his side.

Tina Turner (1939 – 2023)

“My kidneys are victims of my not realising that my high blood pressure should have been treated with conventional medicine. I have put myself in great danger by refusing to face the reality that I need daily, lifelong therapy with medication. For far too long I believed that my body was an untouchable and indestructible bastion.”

The Queen of Rock n Roll made this final post on social media just days before her death. Tina Turner died at her home in Switzerland, following years of illness, she was 83 years old.

John Adams (1735 – 1826)

“Thomas Jefferson survives.”

The American President and founding father died of a heart attack at 90 years of age on the 4th of July, the 50th anniversary of the declaration of independence. He was unaware that longtime friend and rival Thomas Jefferson had died earlier the same day.

Queen Victoria (1819 – 1901)

“Bertie”

This was the last word the Queen spoke, the name of her eldest son and heir, Albert Edward. Queen Victoria died of a stroke, aged 81, at her royal residence Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, surrounded by family.

Queen Elizabeth II (1926 – 2022)

“Edward came to see me.”

Britain’s longest reigning monarch made this final entry in her diary, written two days before she died, referring to private secretary Edward Young who was helping with the swearing in of new ministers. The Queen was 96 years old when she died peacefully in her sleep of old age.

Prince Philip (1921 – 2021)

“Well, I’ve got to be alive for it, haven’t I?”

The husband of the Queen was speaking on the phone to his son Charles the day before he died – Charles had asked him how he wanted to celebrate his upcoming 100th birthday. Aged 99 Prince Philip died peacefully of old age, the Queen was at his bedside.
